Abstract

Dentin hypersensitivity is pain that lasts shortly and sharp due to stimuli to an open dentin which is caused by gingival recession. When the open dentin is exposed to a stimuli from outside, fluid in the dentinal tubules experiences in and out mechanical movements which may trigger the pain. This study aimed to infiltrate the dentin tubules so that the open dentin tubules could be sealed back. Hydroxyapatite (HA) was chosen as the infiltration base material since it is the largest component (70%) of dentin and also biocompatible. Calcium phosphate precipitation method was used in this study. Variations of HA concentration (0.133 M: 0.113 M: 0.093 M: 0.073 M: 0.053 M) were conducted to observe the effect of HA addition to the microstructure and the biocompatibility of the obtained precipitate. The SEM test result showed that the addition of HA concentration resulted in denser and thicker precipitate, of which the concentration of 0.133 M yielded the best precipitate. ANOVA test on the results of MTT assay showed that increasing the HA concentration of the solution showed no significant difference in the number of cells with the condition that the percentage of the living cells is still below the toxicity threshold. Based on the SEM result, hydroxyapatite has the potential as a material for dentine hypersensitivity therapy, yet an optimization to the solutions’ concentrations would be necessary to obtain biocompatible solutions.
