Abstract

The development of literature in Japan began in the 7th century when Japanesescholars were sent to China to study various cultures and literature. Since thenJapan gave birth to a variety of literary works, one of which is haiku. Haiku is aclassic Japanese poem that has a short structure. One of the haiku poets of the Edoperiod was Matsuo Basho. He often traveled to areas in Japan and made severalbooks based on the trip. One of his books is Oku no Hosomichi, which containsnotes on Basho's journey to the northern part of Japan. Besides the travel notes, init Basho also wrote a lot of haiku. Basho’s haiku is always synonymous with theuse of words related to natural beauty. But behind that, Basho's haiku has impliedmeanings that can be studied. Therefore, this study aims to determine the implicitmeaning of haiku in Oku no Hosomichi. This study uses a semiotic analysismethod using the semiotics theory of Charles Sanders Peirce, namely by using atriadic triangle to determine the interpretation of haiku. Besides that, writer alsoclassifies symbols that can be found in haiku. In this study, the writer will take 5haiku works by Matsuo Basho which he wrote during the summer to be analyzed, because in the summer Basho wrote a lot of haiku with various meanings. Fromthe results of this study, several interpretations of the meaning implied in Basho'shaiku, include the meaning of religion, morality, to the meaning that describes thefeelings of the poet itself.
