Abstract
Register refers to certain occupational groups usage of special terminology to express shared meaning. This study analyzes the register used by sellers and buyers at Fiverr’s Music and Audio gig. Fiverr is an online marketplace that provides two-sided platform as buyer and seller to trade a variety of digital services. The aims of this study are to find the vocabulary of the register used by sellers and buyers and analyze the use of the vocabulary in the context. The method of this study is qualitative and the data were analyzed by using Holmes’s (2013) theory of registers and social factors of context. The source of the data is Fiverr and the objects are 5 latest conversations from Jingles and Intros gig, Mixing and Mastering gig, Producers and Composers gig, and Sound Effects gig. The result shows that there are 38 vocabularies which are used by sellers and buyers, most of them have different meaning in the dictionary and in the context. From 38 terms, 9 terms cannot be found in the dictionary while rest can be found in the dictionary but with different meanings. The use of the vocabulary which marked the register is used considering the context. The social factors that are significant to analyze the meaning of the vocabulary are the topic, the setting, and the attachment of the conversation. The vocabulary of register are created in order to make sellers and buyers communicate effectively without long explanation. By using special terms whose meanings are difficult for outsiders to understand, it can be a marker for the community as an occupational group.
