Abstract
The language use between men and women is dissimilar. Both gender are also expected to act differently by societies. This situation leads further dissimilarities between them. The aim of this study is to identify women’s linguistic features occurring in the movie Ocean’s 8. This study required descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected from the utterances of eight female characters in the movie Ocean’s 8. Those female characters are portrayed as self-dependent women. Besides, this movie genre is a heist movie which is usually played by males. The theory used is from an American linguist Robin Lakoff who proposed ten features of women’s language which is widely known as women’s linguistic features. This study found all women’s linguistic features were used by the eight female characters. Intensifiers was the most frequently used feature in this study. Women’s linguistic features still occurred in female characters’ utterances even though their characters are pictured as self-made or independent women in order to protect their image. This study also supported Lakoff's theoretical claims that women’s language is primarily linked with their social identity as subordinate group and women use the women linguistic features in their speech to defend their image as the guardian of the society expected to behave politely in every situation.
