Abstract

The phenomenon of collocation error in English writing has become a common problem among EFL learners. Therefore, this research was done to investigate the types of collocation errors mostly produced by EFL learners in their academic writing used the theory by Benson et al. (1986) and the writer selected the articles that involved high school students and college students. The writer also examines the implications of the research findings on collocation errors to help EFL learners and the writing teachers to prevent the misuse of collocations. The writer used a qualitative method and literature review-based research to review the studies related to the writer's topic. Based on the keywords "research on collocation errors in EFL writing + research gate" and several criteria, a total of 20 articles were obtained and reviewed. The writer found that lexical collocation errors were the most frequent collocation errors that occurred in EFL learners writing with the percentage 60%. The most common lexical collocations errors found are verb + noun collocations 50%, adjective + noun collocations 34%, and verb + noun/pronoun collocations 8%. Thus, the most frequent subtype of lexical collocation errors is verb + noun. The possible causes of the errors were the interference of the mother tongue, intralingual, and context of learning. Based on the review of 20 studies, EFL teachers must pay attention to: raising awareness of collocation, learning and teaching strategies, and extending learning beyond the classrooms in order to minimize lexical collocation errors in writing.
