Abstract

Speech is a communication from the speaker to the audience to convey messages according to the topic given. In some cases, more than one speaker spoke to the audience sequentially but on the same issue. This case will be questioned if the occupations of the speakers are different. This study aims to analyze illocutionary acts uttered by different speakers in the National Geographic YouTube Channel entitled "Tracking Plastic Sea to Source". The study was conducted using a qualitative approach. The data was collected from National Geographic YouTube Channel. In analyzing the data, the writer used illocutionary acts theory purposed by Searle (1985) and speaker responsibilism by Paterson (2019). The three speakers are Heather Koldewey, Pete Muller, and Rue Mapp. The findings of this study are found five types of illocutionary acts and the speaker responsibilism on the different speakers. Representative act is the most dominant type of illocutionary act in the speeches from three speakers with 81% and followed by 7% directive act, 3% commissive act, 7% expressive act, and 2% declaration act. As from representative act related to the three speaker’s beliefs towards their statement; Heather, Pete, and Rue provide the data and state the fact to emphasize their speeches. Therefore, they utter representative act to explain the situation and condition about nature, especially plastic pollution in the ocean as the main topic in the video.
