Abstract
The various interpretations of death are derived from a various genre of literature, for example the imagery of death in young-adult fantasy genre, whereas in this literary genre, the main discussion is usually concerned with how the literary work portrayed the elements of fantasy genre which are not as realistic as the portrayal of an everyday life of a teenager. However, in recent years, some novels with young-adult fantasy genre have been popular because the involvement of a fantastic character such as a vampire that is identical with gothic elements, such in Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy. In this research, the researcher is interpreting the meaning of death in Vampire Academy using one of the structuralism branches proposed by Tzvetan Todorov. The data analysis was conducted toward the formal elements through Todorov’s three aspects of structuralism. The finding in this research is the death is interpreted as something ambiguous, easy, feminine, a way to giving one self’s pleasure, and as a tool to gain success which is related to the young-adult and fantasy genre of this novel.
