Abstract

Few studies have been conducted concerning the crabs population from the Java Sea. The objective of the present study was to determine the length-weight relationship (LWR), sex ratio, and condition factors (K) of Portunus pelagicus from Java Sea Indonesia. The methods for this study were collecting of sample, estimating of carapace length-weight relationship, sex ratio and condition factor. Crab specimens were caught by local fisherman using crab traps during Nov 2016 to Jan 2017. Total length and body weight of crabs were measured to the nearest 0.01 cm and 0.01 g respectively. Male and female crabs were separated to calculate the sample size. The carapace length-weight relationship (LWR) was estimated using the log form of the allometric growth equation. Chi-square analyses were used to compare male and female ratio. The condition factor was calculated according to Fulton's method. The LWRs of males, females, and total individuals were W = 0.033L3.325, W = 0.041L3.183 and W = 0.039L3.222, respectively. The sex ratio of P. pelagicus was 1.45:1 (females/males), was significantly different from the expected 1:1 value. The condition factors for males, females, and total individuals ranged from 5.04 to 8.88, 4.22 to 11.70 and 4.22 to 11.70, respectively. © 2018 Author(s).
