Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease which characterized by hyperglycemia due to destruction of insulin secretion, insulin action or both that requires long-term therapy. If treatment don’t do properly there will be complications. The aim of this study was to see the profile of drug uses in Mulyorejo Primary Health Care Surabaya patients with Diabetes Mellitus which includes the amount of the drugs, the pharmacological group of drugs, types of drugs, how to use drugs and adherence. This research was a descriptive with cross-sectional and interview method. Descriptive analysis were used for data analysing. The sample was Mulyorejo Primary Health Care Surabaya patients who had been diagnosed Diabetes Mellitus disease and got oral antidiabetic drugs during May to June 2014. Based on this research, that of the 40 patients, most of them used 4 kinds of drug (30,00%); most pharmacological group of drugs beside oral antidiabetic drugs was vitamins (57,50%); most types of drugs was generic (97,42%); most patients used glibenclamide and metformin once a day, in 24-hour-interval; most patients used glibenclamide before meal (96,55%) and metformin after meal (91,43%); most patients used more than 3 kinds of drugs in the morning (35,00%); patients adhered to use their therapies by pill count method (40,00%). The conclusions was patients used more than one kinds of drug and only 40,00% patients were adhered to their therapies. Pharmacists have to give counseling to Diabetes Mellitus patients in Mulyorejo Primary Health Care Surabaya related the patients’s therapies and monitoring the outcomes therapy.
