Abstract

Hydrogen is a flammable gas, at standard temperatures and pressures hydrogen gas is colorless, odorless, non-metallic so it can not be detected by the human senses. Therefore we need a instrument that can provide fast and accurate responses to detect its presence and measure its concentration. Optical technology by utilizing optical fibers and interferometers has been developed for hydrogen gas sensors because they are easily fabricated, low cost but still have high potential to detect hydrogen and able to provide high sensitivity. The method to increase the sensitivity and response time of the sensor is by adding a film Pd/Pt as catalyst layer in the hydrogen sensor. But the addition of Pd layer in the sensor is influenced by its thickness, where the thicker Pd will give the sensor the higher sensitivity but reduces the speed of sensor response time. The best sensitivity has been obtained is 0,99 nm/% using a Pd thickness of 70 μm and the fastest response time is 15 seconds using a Pd thickness of 3 nm.
