Abstract

Men and women are different not only in their physical appearance but also in their language. Men’s language is considered to be more logical than women’s language. Women are said to rely more on feeling, but in reality, women’s language contains information about their identity. This study aims to analyse women’s linguistic features used by the two main female characters in Hustlers. This study used a qualitative method for analysing the data. The data are mainly from the utterances of the two main characters, Destiny and Ramona. The writer used the theory of Lakoff (2004) to analyse the women’s linguistic features then relate them to the social factors of Holmes (2013). The findings of this study show that there are six women’s linguistic features, which are lexical hedges, tag question, rising intonation, ‘empty’ adjectives, intensifiers, and emphatic stress. The presence and absence of features are influenced by social factors such as the participants, settings, topics, and functions. Moreover, this study found that with the background of the two main characters, which are criminals (uneducated women), they still maintain their ladylikeness.
