Abstract

Treatment for non specific diarrhea use single adsorbent such as norit and attapulgit, while treatment for specific diarrhea need combination of antibiotics and adsorbents. The adsorbents can adsorb antibiotics if they are used simultaneously in the treatment of diarrhea, so it is likely to reduce levels of antibiotics that will affect the treatment. The objective of this study is to determine the adsorption capacity of activated carbon and attapulgit to tetracycline. To determine the adsorptive capacity of activated carbon and attapulgit to tetracycline, the tetracycline solution was mixed with an adsorbent, and stirred for 2 hours at constant rpm for 2 hours at room temperature, then tetracyclin was assayed by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The adsorptive capacity is represented in k and n empirical value calculated from Freundlich isotherm adsorption. The result showed that activated carbon – tetracycline adsorption have k = 0.0182 and n = 0.7587, while attapulgite – tetracycline adsorption have k = 0.0575 and n = 0.8685. Adsorptive capacity of attapulgite to tetracycline is higher than adsorptive capacity of actived carbon to tetracycline.
