Abstract

This study discusses a music community called Pertemuan Musik Surabaya (PMS), this PMS was formed in 1957 with the background of the nonactivity of music in the city of Surabaya The activities of two agents, namely artists and music activists in the PMS community, are interesting in expressing cultural practices through cultural studies with the perspective of Pierre Felix Bourdieu's practice which includes habitus, arena and capital with an ethnographic approach, where this research reveals the existence of (1) Cultural practices developed by artists and music activists in the PMS community, (2) The configuration of capital artists and activists in the PMS community. This research goes through the process of going directly to the field with observations / observations, and in-depth interviewing the informants needed in this study. Then use literature study and documentation as material for literature review. Based on the results of this study, it shows that there is a condition of cultural practice through the habitus formed by artists and music activists at PMS which explains that the creativity carried out by the community is a form of taste in music. In addition, there is a configuration of capital in the Surabaya music arena by artists and music activists, interpreted by the existence of Art Culture and Knowledge Culture. Therefore, in this study, the role of artists and music activists in the PMS community has colored and contributed to the music arena in the city of Surabaya since 1957 until now. Especially the figure of Slamet Abdul Sjukur as the founding father of PMS who has received public recognition.
