Abstract

Gingival enlargement, also known as gingival hyperplasia or hypertrophy, is an abnormal overgrowth of gingival tissues. Generally, there are 4 (four) causes of gingival enlargement: inflammatory gingival enlargement, drug induced gingival enlargement, enlargement associated with systemic diseases or conditions, neoplastic enlargement and false enlargement. The purpose of this review is to explain management of gingival enlargement with conventional gingivectomy. Gingivectomy means excision of the gingiva. Excision of the gingiva is aimed to remove the pocket wall to obtain physiologic gingival contour and good esthetic. Gingivectomy can be performed by: surgical (scalpel) gingivectomy, electrosurgery, laser and chemosurgery. The conventional gingivectomy performed by a scalpel which has been used the most common method. Gingivectomy provides a viable option of gingival enlargement treatment.
