Abstract

Background. Clinical experience suggest that hyperthyroidism can affect the low of mineral density due to the alveolar bone resorption. The mechanism starts from the over activity of thyroid hormone on hyperthyroidism, produce lowof TSH level and increased T3 (tri -iodotironin) and T4 (tiroxin) level. These condition is responsible of metabolism in human body. This was supported by l aboratory studies which declared that biochemical marker of bone formation and bone resorption were elevated in hyperthyroid patient indicating increased bone turnover in favor of osteoclastic bone resorption. Purpose. The aim of this study is to obtain alveolar bone loss severity in hyperthyroid patients through periapical radiographic observation. Method. This study is conducted by examining by 18 patients suffered from systemic disease, that is hyperthyroid which newly detected. The patients not under orth odontic treatment, or any dental treatment and have a good oral hygine. Periapical radiograph with parallel technique is done for each on their posterior teeth (P1 and P2) of mandible. The alveolar bone loss is measured from mesial and distal each tooth. T he score of measurement then classified into severity of bone loss : absence (0 -2mm), moderate (3-4mm), and advance (≥6mm). Result. This study shows that the most of them are suffered moderate bone loss (3 -5mm) ,few absence(0-2mm) and rare for advance (≥6mm). Conclusion. There are bone loss severity in hyperthyroid patients which can be worst if leave it untreated
