Abstract

Curcumin has potential effect to treat various diseases including hepatoprotector. The major problems that prevent its pharmaceutical application are its poor absorption caused by its low water solubility, fast metabolism, and rapid systemic elimination. Those lead low bioavaiblity of curcumin. To overcome this problem, there are some method and technique that can be used including liposome. Liposomes are considered as effective drug carriers because of their ability to increase solubility of hydrophobic compounds and to alter their pharmacokinetic properties. The purpose of this study is to determine physical characteristics of liposomal curcumin (partikel size, morphology, thermal properties and X-ray difraction pattern) prepared from hydrogenated soybean phosphatidylcholine (HSPC) and dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DODAB). The liposomal curcumin was dried preserving thus increased its stability. The result showed the particle size of curcumin liposome prepared from HSPC had a larger size which was 2411,4 ± 91,7 nm (PI 0,316 ± 0,10), whereas the formula prepared from DODAB had size of 579,3 ± 253,2 nm (PI 0,386 ± 0,05). Both formulas also had relatively rounded shape. The results of thermal analysis showed no separation ingredients were found in both formulas except sucrose. It was found that they had no peak of curcumin in the thermogram. Pattern of X-ray diffraction showed the same result as thermal analysis. There were not found crystallization of ingredients, but only found the crystals of sucrose in both formula and crystal DODAB in liposomes prepared of DODAB. From this study, both liposomes had a good characteristic and they had potentially developed to deliver curcumin as hepatoprotector.
