Abstract

Microencapsulation is a method in which active substance are trapped in a matrix. Microencapsulation can protecting an active substance and regulate the release of active substance with right dose, right place, and right time. Lactobacillus casei as active substance and Eudragit L100 as matrix. Lactobacillus casei not stable in gastric fluid and has immunomodulatory effects with target site in the intestine. Lactobacillus casei was made into microparticle using Spray Drying Method in 98oC inlet temperature with three different content of Eudragit L100 matrices. Three different formula were named formula I, formula II, and formula III used Eudragit L100 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0% recpectively as a matrices of microparticle. Physical characteristic and immunomodulatory activity were perfomed in all formula. The result showed that microparticle morphology in all formula have spherical shape with different roughness or concave surface. The particle size of microparticle increased with increasing Eudragit L100. The particle size of all formula were varied in the range 4.9-39.2 μm. The highest viability of Lactobacillus casei under spray drying process obtained from FI is 86.41 %. The highest encapsulation efficiency obtained from FIII is 48.61%. The highest immunomodulatory effect produced 4.01 by FII.
