Abstract

This study focuses on the comparison of swear words used by main male and female characters in The Wolf of Wall Street movie. Wajnryb (2005) provides seventeen types of swear words and three functions of swear words that were used in this study. This study used qualitative approach because the writer used text as the data. The data were collected by downloading the script of the movie which consists of the conversation from main male and female characters in The Wolf of Wall Street movie. Then, the writer found each type of swear words and analyzed them by using Wajnryb’s theory (2005). The finding shows that there are nine of the seventeen types of swear words used by the main male character in The Wolf of Wall Street movie, they are abusive swearing, epithet, foul language, insult, obscenity, profanity, swear, taboo words, and vulgarity. By using those nine types of swear words, the main male character uses swear words as cathartic swearing, aggression swearing, and social connection swearing. Moreover, the main female character uses five of the seventeen types of swear words, they are abusive swearing, epithet, insult, obscenity, and vulgarity. By using those five types of swear words, the main female character only uses swear word as cathartic swearing and aggression swearing. Since swear words can be used in the same meaning and different purpose, it depends on the speakers’ condition.
