Abstract

There are many unique language features which appear in online setting which are actually different from features in face-to-face interaction. Females and males also have different styles and they have their own way in delivering their ideas through writing especially in online setting. This study aims to obtain the typical internet language features and dictions used by male and female Youtube users in commenting controversial music videosfrom a female and a male singer that contain the exploration of female’s body. The data were analyzed using Danet’s theory (2001) that classifies the common features of digital writing into 11 features, such as multiple punctuations, eccentric spelling, capital letters, asterisks for emphasis, written-out laughter,music/noise, description of actions, emoticons, abbreviations, rebus writing, and all lower case. Regarding the dictions, the writer uses Antconc software to scrutinize the diction further. This study used qualitative method. The samples were taken using purposive sampling technique. The number of samples taken was 200 samples that divided further into two groups based on gender. The results show that males and females have different internet language features when they are writing in online setting. Mostly males in both video used Multiple punctuations which is multiple periods to express pause, while females in both video are more often to use Emoticons. It means that females are more expressive in showing their feeling. Moreover, males and femalesare more expressive when commenting a female video than a male video and this is considered controversial. Besides, from the percentage of taboo words, the writer obtained that males are more often to use taboo words, so that females are considered to be more polite and less use taboo words. In addition, females are more talkative than males based on the total words that they produce.
