Abstract

The introduction of the Internet into education has changed the teaching and learning system. Technology provides new opportunities for supporting the learning process in educational environments. Given the recent popularity of e-learning, this research focuses on the comparison result between e-learning and classroom learning in Indonesia. This research aims to find out the result of lecture conducted through the e-learning class and classroom learning class, and also to determine whether or not there is a significant difference between the results of e-learning and those of classroom learning class. The aim of this research is also to gather the opinion of the students about the implementation of e-learning. The sample of this research is the students who take Introduction to General Linguistics class B and D. In the two classes selected, the research focuses on the topics of phonetics and phonology. This research uses a mixed method approach. The quantitative method is used to test if there is a significant difference between e-learning and classroom learning using statistical test named T-test. The qualitative method is used to interpret the open ended question about students’ opinions regarding the implementation of e-learning and classroom learning. From the result of phonetics and phonology lectures, the writer concludes that e-learning is as effective as classroom learning to be implemented in Introduction to General Linguistic class. It can be shown from the differences of the means of each class is not too significant and based on the result of the T-test, the T-test is greater than 0.05 in both lectures. The writer concludes that elearning is as effective as the classroom learning to be implemented in Introduction to General Linguistics class. From the qualitative analysis, the opinions from the students who joined the Introduction in General Linguistics class, it was found that 85% of the students support the implementation of e-learning. The opinions given by the student are the important thing to produce a quality e-learning system.
