Abstract

Slips of the tongue are one-time mistakes in speech production planning that happen when the speaker intends to utter a particular word or phrase and during the planning process something goes wrong, so that the production is at odds with the plan. Slips of the tongue may happen to anyone and it occurs naturally. Slips of the tongue involve the sounds or words of the language and it is related with speech production. The writer conducted this study in order to analyse further about slips of the tongue, especially those that occur in the utterances produced by television news reporters of Kompas TV. The data for this study were collected from two news programs of Kompas TV, which are Kompas Siang and Kompas Petang, and were analysed using the combined types of slips of the tongue proposed by Fromkin (1973) and Harley (1995). The findings of this study showed that not all of the types of slips of the tongue proposed by both linguists occurred in the utterances produced by television news reporters of Kompas TV. From the 117 slips of the tongue that happened, the types of slips of the tongue produced by television news reporters of Kompas TV are namely phoneme anticipation, phoneme deletion, affix deletion, word blend, word exchange, word substitution, phoneme perseveration, and misderivations. The most common type of slips of the tongue that was present during the research is word substitution with 41 slips of the tongue (56.16%) out of 117 slips of the tongue that occurred. The writer also found out some new types of slips of the tongue that do not belong to the types of slips of the tongue proposed by Fromkin (1973) and Harley (1995) namely word deletion, misinflection, phoneme change, syllable insertion, misinflection, and phoneme reversal
