Abstract

Racism towards African-American brings many impacts to African-American people‘s life, especially who have ever experienced it. One of some psychological effects that experienced by African-American is double consciousness do depicted in Durrow‘s The Girl Who Fell from the Sky. It is portrayed through the main character of the novel named Rachel Morse, a daughter of a white mother and an African-American father, who has identity problem in her new society. This study discusses the portrayal of double consciousness and the identity negotiation of Rachel Morse as the result of her double consciousness by applying double consciousness theory by W.E.B. Du Bois, this study reveals that Rachel Morse experiences double consciousness because of ‗one-drop‘ rule, Rachel‘s being caught in two cultures, and the ‗veil‘. It also shows that Rachel‘s negotiation of her identity in American society does not change others‘ opinion about her identity as African-American. She negotiates her biracial identity through some actions, such as pretends to be real African-American in front of others, and keep her white characteristics and habits as secret. This study concludes that the effects of double consciousness bring misery to African-American and biracial people. However this can be reduced by minimizing the practice of racism and stereotypes in American society.
