Abstract

Preterm delivery is an important problem in obstetrics. 32,4% of preterm delivery is causing perinatal mortality. 75% cause of preterm delivery are idiopathic which means an unknown cause but there are some number of risk which are socio-economic, race, culture, and mother’s characteristic. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of maternal characteristics factors with the incident of preterm delivery in RSUD Dr. M. Soewandhi Surabaya. This study used case control method to 282mother who gave birth on maternity delivery room RSUD Dr. M. Soewandhi Surabaya from 1 January to 31 December 2011. The samples consisted of 94 cases and 188 controls. The case is mother with preterm delivery. The control is mother with no preterm delivery. Case subjects selected by using exhaustive sampling and control subjects selected by using purpose sampling technique. The data were analyzed with Chi-Square test and multiple logistic regression analysis with SPSS 17 for Windows. The result based on multiple logistic regression analysis of the variables parity and cigarette exposure showed that maternal characteristics factors affect the incident of preterm delivery. The probability for an individual to experience preterm delivery with above characteristic factors is 19, 2%. The characteristic factors such as age, education, occupation, and income are not affect preterm delivery. The conclusion of this study showed that the characteristic of parity and cigarette exposure factor affect the mother’s characteristics of preterm delivery incident in RSUD Dr. M Soewandhi Surabaya
