Abstract

Anaemia is a nutrition problem that most suffered by pregnant women. One of prevention and handling anaemia programs is giving an iron/ folate supplementation as much as 90 tablets during pregnancy. Although it was reported that the iron/ folate supplementation was good enough but its expected effect would not be achieved if it was not consumed by pregnant women. The issue of this study is lack of adherence in pregnant women in taking iron/ folate tablets in Pacar Keling Surabaya Health Center, 63.64% are adherent and 36.36% are non-adherent, and lack of knowledge on anaemia of pregnant women, 45% are low knowledgeable, 36.36 are moderate, and 18.64 are high. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between maternal knowledge on anemia with adherence to iron/ folate supplementation in Pacar Keling Surabaya Health Center. The methode is analythical-observational, a cross sectional study according to its time. The population is third trimester pregnant women in Pacar Keling Surabaya Health Center area in June-July 2012, i.e. 89 people. The sampling technique is simple random sampling. The number of sample is 37 respondents. Independent variable is knowledge on anemia and dependent variable is adherence to iron/ folate tablets. The instrument is questionnaire, it is a primary data source. Analysis of data is Phi coefficient. The results showed that most of the low-knowledgeable mother on anaemia (62.50%) were non-adherent to iron/ folate supplementation, most of the moderate-knowledgeable women (71.43%) were adherent, and almost all of the high-knowledgeable women (80.00%) were adherent. The result of the statistical test Phi (π) is 0.346 with significance value (p) 0.108, it means there is no correlation between maternal knowledge on anaemia with adherence to iron/ folate supplementation. The conclusion is no correlation between maternal knowledge on anaemia with adherence to iron/ folate supplementation. It is suggested that pregnant women keep active in increasing their knowledge and consciousness in taking iron/ folate supplements and discuss problems they experienced to the health workers. It is suggested that health workers preserve the good education
