Abstract

The right intra-operative position makes patient more comfortable, makes surgical procedure easier, and minimizes intra-operative complication. In fact, many of the patients do not perform this position well. This research was aimed to analyze the effect of counseling with simulation on the compliance in maintaining intra-operative position in patient of cataract extraction with local anaesthetic. Design used in this research was static group comparison, conducted on June 8`h until July 3`h 2006. The respondents were 22 cataract patients in ophthalmic ward of Dr. Soetomo Hospital, who were enrolled by using purposive sampling. The independent variable was counseling with simulation and the dependent variable was the compliance in maintaining intra-operative position. Data were collected by using questionnaire and observation was undertaken to treatment and non treatment group. Data were analyzed using Mann Whitney Test with level of significance p<0.05. Result revealed that in treatment group satisfactory knowledge and behavior were found in 10 patients (90.91%) and Intra-operative complication occurred in 2 patients (18.18%), while in non treatment group less of knowledge was found in 5 patients (45.45%), moderate behavior in 7 patients (63.645) and Intra-operative complication occurred in 5 patients (45.45%). Result of statistical test on knowledge and intraoperative behavior were p=0.000, indicating significant difference between treatment and non-treatment group. Intraoperative complication level was p=0.180, indicating unsignificant difference between treatment and untreatment group. As conclusion, counseling with simulation has effect on knowledge and intra-operative behavior but has no effect on intra-operative complication level. Further study about post operative care to cataract extraction's patients with counseling and simulation need to be done to prevent post operative complications
