Abstract

Background. Increasing compressive strength is needed for the die stone to reduce abrasiveness caused by continuous high pressure during the trial and adaptation of removable denture and increasing the resistance of the die stone from fracture caused by accidentally falling. The addition of Arabic gum and calcium hydroxide is expected to increase the compressive strength. Purpose. The aim of this study is to compare the effect of Arabic gum and calcium hydroxide addition towards the compressive strength of type-IV gypsum. Material and Method. There were four groups in this research: 1) control group, 2) Arabic gum group, 3) calcium hydroxide group and 4) Arabic gum and calciumhydroxide group. Each group consisted of seven samples. The basic compositions for each sample were 100 gram of type-IV gypsum and 20 ml of water. The first group used the basic composition only. For the second group, the basic composition was added with 1 gram of Arabic gum in every sample; for the third group with 0.132 gram of calcium hydroxide in every sample and for the fourth group with 1 gram of Arabic gum and 0.132 gram of calcium hydroxide in every sample. Every sample was tested using compressive strength tester. The result has been analyzed using One-way ANOVA and LSD tests with significant difference (p<0.05). Results. The second group (x=15,479) showed a significant increase of compressive strength compared with the control group (x=12,785). The third group (x=10) and fourth group (x=9,057) showed a significant decrease of compressive strength compared with the control group. Conclusion. The increase of compressive strength in type-IV gypsum can be achieved by the addition of Arabic gum.
