Abstract

Background: In Prosthodontic treatment, prominent residual ridge is necessary to gain better retention and stability. Tooth extraction, can injure periodontal tissue and alveolar bone which cause bone resorbtion. Spirulina is natural material which has C-Phyocyanin as an anti-inflammatory and immune system booster. Meanwhile, chitosan is natural substance that useful as healing accelerator to improve the function of anti-inflammatory cells. Spirulina and chitosan were inducted to observed their effectiveness in bone healing process, by counted the number of osteoblast cells. Objective: To determine the single dosage of spirulina 9%, 12%, 15% and chitosan 150 mg, 200 mg, and 250 mg induced in tooth extraction socket towards osteoblast cells in the alveolar bone. Method: Tooth extraction was conducted on 49 Cavia cobayas, divided into 7 treatment groups, control group (CMC Na 3%), group I (spirulina 9%), group II (spirulina 12%), group III (spirulina 15%), group IV (chitosan 150 mg), group V (chitosan 200 mg) and group VI (chitosan 250 mg). After 30 days, those were killed and histological preparation was made by Hematoksilin Eosin (HE). The number of osteoblast cells was counted with binocular light microscope with 400x magnification. Result: There were significant differences between control group and group I, group IV, group V and group VI. Conclusion: The induction of single dosage 12% of spirulina can be included as the most effective dosage in increasing the number of oteoblast.
