Abstract

Background. Oral health is an important part of the overall health. The two leading dental diseases are caries and the periodontal diseases. They remain common and widespread, affecting nearly everyone. Especially gingivitis, a very common and mild form of periodontal disease that causes inflammation of the gums. Gingivitis can be very mild, people may not be aware of it. It is important to take gingivitis seriously and treat it promptly to avoid much more serious periodontal disease and eventual tooth loss. Predisposing factors need to be known and classified in order to provide effective treatments and prevent an increase in the prevalence of gingivitis in the society. Gingival Index was used to measure the severity of gingivitis as it is simple and histopathologically proven. RS AL-Irsyad was chosen to be the location of the research as they have adequate amount of patients from a variety of social class, since RS Al-Irsyad is one of the referral hospitals for Healthcare and Social Security Agency or known as BPJS. Purpose. The aim of the study was to estimate the severity of gingivitis among patients in RS Al-Irsyad in 2015 in the hope of improving overall health. Method. This research is a descriptive observational study with cross-sectional approach. The severity of gingivitis was clinically assesed in 100 patients using Gingival Index (GI). An aditional data regarding possible predisposing factors was noted using questionnaire and direct interview prior to the clinical examination. Result and Conclusion. The majority of the patients had mild gingivitis. Predisposing factors that were identified with risk assessment may affect the severity of gingivitis.
