Abstract

Background: Dental caries and periodontal disease are two problems that often destructive teeth caused by dental plaque. Plaque control measures required. There are many ways to prevent dental plaque’s formation, such as antibacterial agent from nature. The herb used in this study is Sida rhombifolia L. or Sidaguri leaf extracts which contains some active agents such as tannin, alkaloid, saponin, polyphenol and flavonoid. Purpose: The research aim is to investigate in vitro antibacterial activity of the leaf extracts from Sidaguri (Sida rhombifolia L.) against supragingival plaque bacteria. Methods: In this study, using Sida rhombifolia L. leaf extracts in various concentration by serial dilution. These are 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.13%, 1.56%, 0.78%, and also positive and negative control. All of concentration was planted in Nutrient Agar and seen bacteria growth. Take 0.1 ml from tube boundary between the growth of bacteria and also positive and negative control then be planted in the Nutrient Agar by spread method for bacteria colonies counting. Results: Compared to positive control, at concentration 50%, colonies of bacteria reduced 100%, at concentration 25% reduced 94%, and at 12,5%, reduced 76%. Conclusion: Sidaguri leaf extract (Sida rhombifolia l.) may inhibit the growth of supragingival plaque bacteria at concentration 25%
