Abstract

Background. Bleeding in dentistry is one complication of tooth extraction or surgery. If there is bleeding, the body will do hemostatis process that can make the blood stops. One of the traditional drugs used to stop bleeding is daun sendok (Plantago mayor L.). Empirically in many communities use daun sendok (Plantago mayor L.) to stop the bleeding but the extract have not been studied scientifically. Purpose. The aim of the present study was to determine the ethanol extract of daun sendok (Plantago mayor L.) has the effects of accelerating blood clotting. Method. The subjects used in this study were fifty healthy male mice (Mus musculus) of Balb C aged 2-3 months, weight 20-30 grams. The subjects were divided into five groups is group one (aquadest), group two (epinephrine), group three (extract 250 mg per kg weight of mice), group four (extract 500 mg per kg weight of mice) and group five (extract 1000 mg per kg weight of mice). Early, tail of mice were cut by 0.3 cm by using a scalpel and then the tail dipped in the test material for 5 seconds. Then, the blood dripped on absorbent paper every 30 seconds until the blood stopped. Results. There is difference of bleeding time between group three and group four and group five but no difference of bleeding time between group four and group five. Conclusion. Extract 1000 mg per kg weight of mice had the strongest effect in accelerating blood clotting compared with aquadest, epinephrine, extract 250 mg per kg weight of mice, and extract 500 mg per kg weight of mice.
