Abstract

Background. Periodontal disease is commonly found in the community, especially in the form of gingivitis with varies severity. In women, During the menstrual cyle, the results of research experts showed the presence of an increased prevalence of gingivitis. Sex hormones affect the periodontium is progesterone and estrogen. Purpose. know the severity of gingivitis during the pre and menstruation on the students of Airlangga University Faculty of Dentistry. Methods. Gingival state examination carried out during 7th day before and 1st through the 3rd days to observe the entire marginal gingiva and calculated with gingival index. Upper and lower jaw is divided into 6 segments and every total score per segments divided by 6. That average score per person show the gingival index. Result. Gingivitis on pre menstruation phase worse than gingivitis on menstruation phase. Conclusion. Changes in the oral cavity is affected by hormonal imbalances that occur during the menstrual period.
