Abstract

Introduction: Osteoporosis are positively associated with the estrogen deficiency condition in post-menopausal women. Ovariectomized female rats have been used as animal model which has similar characteristics of bone loss and bone formation close to post-menopausal women naturally. A research had shown that Reactive Oxidative Stress (ROS) was able to inhibit the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblastic cells through its oxidative damage and apoptosis. On the other hands, some studies reported that ROS may enhance osteoclastinduced bone resorption. Pomegranate contain flavonoids such as tanin, ellagic acid and punicalagin which are potent antioxidants to protect body from ROS. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the antioxidant effect of pomegranate juice on mandibular bone resorption in ovariectomized rats, determined by c-telopeptide (CTX) as a biomarker of osteoclast activity. The results were analyzed statistically using One Way ANOVA test. Methods: After 3 weeks being ovariectomized, the rats consumed 2 ml of pomegranate juice daily for a period of 4 weeks. The serum from mandible was collected to examine the effect on its bone resorption. CTX was measured by using ELISA kit assay. Results: The mean CTX levels of control group (205,33±50,63) and ovariectomized rats group (314,29±104,07). Less CTX levels were found in the group of osteoporosis female rats with daily pomegranate juice comsumption (183,18±37,66) Conclusion: Daily consumption of pomegranate juice as antioxidant may have a contribution in preventing the mandibular bone resorption that occurs in post-menopausal osteoporosis rats.
