Abstract

Background. Malocclusion prevalence at adolescents in Indonesia is still high, in 2006 was 89%, while their behavior to maintain dental health, especially malocclusion is not optimal. The impact is not only affect chewing and speaking (function) but also appearance and self confident (aesthetic). Researchers suggested that people are aware of malocclusion but they feel no need for the treatment. It is influenced by needs and demand of person. Purpose. The aim of this study was to show needs and demand of orthodontic treatment in SMA Negeri 1 Kediri students. Method. This study uses descriptive research method with total sample of 56 students drawn randomly. Data collection was taken through a questionnaire to ask demand and the DHC of the IOTN to assess orthodontic treatment need. Result. Using Dental Health Component (DHC) of IOTN assessment, researcher found 28.6% had no need/need slight treatment, 33.9% need borderline/moderate treatment, and 37.5% had definite need of treatment. Based on the results of a questionnaire, 39.3% desire orthodontic treatment, while 60.7% did not desire orthodontic treatment. Conclusion. Based on the result of research conducted in SMA Negeri 1 Kediri, the highest level of orthodontic treatment need is in grade 4 and 5 by 37,3% which means definite need of orthodontic treatment, while the result of questionnaire showed 60,7% which is on the students who do not desire orthodontic treatment.
