Abstract

Background. Perceptions of malocclusion by the public are mainly subjective, currently orthodontic treatment needs are determined by perceptive or normative, but predominantly determined using normative need. The perceptive need as evaluated by patients and the normative need to orthodontic treatment, as assessed by proffesional. There are differences between normative and perceptive of dental appearance and needs for orthodontic treatment. Purpose. The aim of this study was to investigate the difference between the perceptive and normative orthodontic treatment need in adolescent from aesthetic aspect. Method. The subjects were random sample of 110 adolescent aged 15-18 years studying in SMAN 1 Sidayu. Orthodontic treatment need was measured with the Aesthetic Component Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (AC-IOTN). AC scores as rated by the adolescent and by the examiner were recorded. Orthodontic aesthetic selfperception was collected from using a questionnaire with Oral Aesthetics Subjective Impact Scale (OASIS). Result. For the AC by adolescent, 97.3% were in the ‘without treatment need’ category, 1.8% in the ‘borderline need’ category and 0.9% in the ‘treatment need’ category. While the AC by examiner, 77.3% were in the ‘without treatment need’ category, 18.2% in the ‘borderline need category and 4.5% in the ‘treatment need’ category. The mean OASIS score was 15.33. Conclussion. There are considerable differences between normative and perceptive of dental appearance and needs for orthodontic treatment. malocclusion impact showed a positive relationship with the orthodontic treatment need.
