Abstract

Background. Dental biofilm accumulated in soft or hard surface in mouth, including removable orthodontic appliance. Biofilm containing Candida albicans can cause denture stomatitis. Aloe vera toothpaste can reduce biofilm accumulation and also Candida albicans’ colony. Purpose. The aim of this study was to know the effects on the usage of Aloe vera toothpaste and placebo toothpaste towards Candida albicans’ colony on removable orthodontic appliance wearers. Method. This research uses patients who wears removable orthodontic appliance. 20 patients become the total samples, chosen with selective random sampling, divided into two groups. A group of 10 patients brush their teeh and their removable orthodontic appliance with Aloe vera toothpaste, while the other group of 10 patients brush their teeh and their removable orthodontic appliance with placebo toothpaste. Result. The independent T-test showed there was a significant difference between the use of placebo toothpaste and Aloe vera toothpaste (p=0.008 <α=0.05). Conclusion. These results showed that the usage of Aloe vera toothpaste have an effect on Candida albicans’ colony on removable orthodontic appliance wearers. The usage of Aloe vera toothpaste reduces Candida albicans’ colony 44.65% compared with Candida albicans’ colony with the usage of placebo toothpaste.
