Abstract

The early use of removable orthodontic devices leads to complaint of increased saliva secretion. The objective of the present research is to determine whether there is a difference in secretory saliva volume of removable orthodontic use prior to and subsequent to insertion of the device. The research may be used as a basis for operators in giving instructions and motivation to the patients that the increased saliva volume persists only in a short period and is a physiological process. The method of the research is experimental. The research was conducted on periods of November-December 2008 at Orthodontic Clinic I of Dental Faculty of Airlangga University-RSGM Unair. Sixteen samples were collected from a population of 9-14 year-old patients who were nursed in Orthodontic Clinic I of Dental Faculty of Airlangga University-RSGM UNAIR and fulfilled sampling criteria. Methode: measurement procedure of secretory saliva volume was by spitting into a calibrated glass for five minutes prior to insertion of the device and five minutes immediately subsequent to the insertion. Data was analyzed by paired t-test, with results before use removable orthodontic=9,5250 ml and after use removable orthodontic= 11,2125 ml and of p<0.05. These results are indicative of the effects of the use of removable orthodontic device on the increase in saliva volume.
