Abstract

Background. Intra oral radiography as a part of supporting factors in dentistry, particularly in endodontic treatment that mostly used periapical radiography and needed for diagnosis, pre, and post treatment. Parallel periapical radiography that often used in the clinic, not always identified all of the root canals. For example root canals in permanent mandibular first molar, seen only one canal at mesio that normally has two canals. A single radiograph of permanent mandibular first molar should be made from the modification of paralleling technique which is called with SLOB’s technique. The SLOB’s technique was done by changed the horizontal angulations into 20o mesial and distal angulations. Used film holding instrument to position the film properly in the patient’s mouth and maintain the film in position. Based on this, a study of using modified film holder with SLOB’s technique has been done on permanent mandibular first molar. Purpose. The aim of this study was to know the difference of the result between radiography using modified film holder at angle of 20o mesial and distal angulations in order to identify the numbers of root canals. Method. This research was done in an observational analytic statistic with 24 samples. Each sample gets 2 times of exposure, 20o mesial and distal angulations using modified film holder in SLOB’s technique. Result. There were no significant differences between the use of modified film holder in SLOB’s technique at angle 20o mesial and distal angulations. Conclusion. Modified film holder SLOB’s technique at angle 20o mesial and distal angulations could be used to identify the numbers of root canals on permanent mandibular first molar.
