Abstract

Background. Foaming agent is one important substance in toothpaste. SLS is a detergent that commonly use as foaming agent in toothpaste. It has a danger potential to provide oral tissue damage. Rice straw water is an alternative to replace SLS function as foaming agent. The density of rice straw water as foaming agent in toothpaste is needed to be determined. This study was conducted by increasing the density of rice straw water (60 g, 80 g and 100 g rice straw ash in 500 ml distilled water) in order to increase the volume of foam generated. Purpose. The aim of this study was to determine the increasing density of rice straw water as a foaming agent in toothpaste to the volume of foam generated. Methods. Toothpaste with 0,15% SLS and toothpaste with rice straw water in three different density (60 g, 80 g and 100 g rice straw ash in 500 ml distilled water) were experimented on horizontal toothbrushing simulation machine to know the difference of each other in generating foam. The research was analyzed by Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Result. There were significant differences between the volume of foam generated by each sample groups. Conclusion. The increasing of rice straw water density in toothpaste will increase the volume of foam generated.
