Abstract

Flies are one of the insects from the order Diptera. Several true flies species have very important role and responsibility in health issues such as vectors of transmission disease. The aims of this study are to determine the types of flies that can be found in markets in Surabaya and to determine whether Salmonella, Shigella, Escheriscia coli, and Staphylococcus bacteria can be found on the exoskeletons of the flies or not. Method of this research was collected flies by capturing flies using an insect net and bait. Then flies were identified of its kinds at Parasitology Laboratory, Veterinary Medicine Faculty of Airlangga University. At each flies exoskeleton were then isolated and identified at Bacteriological Laboratory, Veterinary Medicine Faculty of Airlangga University. This research was conducted during the months of November to December 2013. Results of this research shown that there are three dominant flies are found, they are Musca domestica, Chrysomya megacephala, and Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis. While Staphylococcus, E. coli, Salmonella spp., and Shigella spp. found at exoskeleton of them.
