Abstract

This research is studying about post-colonial issue of unhomeliness. It specifically discusses the existence of unhomeliness in the main character's life in V.S. Naipaul's The Mimic Men. The writer is trying to show the way unhomeliness is reflected in Ralph Singh's life and the way he deals with it at the end of the novel. In analyzing the unhomeliness in the novel, the writer uses post-colonial theory as the most appropriate theory. The main concepts used in this study are the concepts of unhomeliness, migrant identity, and mimicry. The unhomeliness in Ralph Singh’s life is reflected in some of his thoughts and feelings shown in the novel, like the way he always feels 'shipwrecked' and compares himself with strange things he never sees. It is also reflected in the changes that he experienced in his life about his identity and the way he mimics the colonizer. Eventually, at the end of the novel, his unhomeliness can be overcome and it fades away by writing his memoir. In conclusion, this study shows that the sense of unhomeliness is the result of ambiguous cultural identity as the impact of colonization.
