Abstract

Grandfathers as one of the family members are entrusted to look after their grandchildren while parents are working. During looking after the grandchildren, the grandfathers do activity which is reading story book. In reading story book, grandfathers do not only read the printed text in the book, but also share and discuss together with their grandchildren in order to make them more interested in the story given. In short, the grandfathers do extra textual interaction in reading story book activity. The aim of this study is to find out the extra textual interaction procuded by grandfathers in reading story books to their grandchildren aged 3-4 years old and the most frequent category employed by grandfathers. The data were collected by recording the interaction of four grandfathers in reading story books to their grandchildren. Then, the writer analyzed the findings using coding procedures used by Natsiopoulou, Souliotis, & Kyridis (2003). According to the data analysis, the writer found that all participants employed all of the twelve categories in the coding procedure, those were, attention, names, asking about names, feedback, repetition, elaboration, organizing the activity, prediction, relating story to real life, recalling information, clarifying, and asking for clarification. The most frequent extra textual interaction produced by grandfathers was in the category of names. It is caused by the grandfathers wanted to help their grandchildren acquire the understanding about the names for characters, objects, incidents, and settings in the story book clearly. Children aged 3-4years old began to have the ability in acquiring labels and symbols, and also giving labels to objects.
