Abstract

In this thesis, the writer analyses the novel entitled The Other Boleyn Girl written by Philippa Gregory. This study discusses the aspects which influence Anne Boleyn, the main character, to have strong motivation and how the motivation develops in the way of reaching the goal and satisfaction in her life, as well as the impacts it bring to her. The writer will use Psychological approach; particularly the theory of human’s motivation by Abraham Maslow, known as ”The Hierarchy of Needs”. The study uses qualitative research method which mainly lies on descriptive analysis. There will be analysis of characterization since this study focuses on the development of Anne’s motivation. It is later revealed that the aspects which influence Anne to have strong motivation in life consist of her environment (the Tudor era and the Boleyn Family itself) as well as the higher level of satisfaction in the fulfillment of her higher needs, which are love and belonging needs, self-esteem needs and self-actualization needs.
