Abstract

This thesis examines the portrayals of cyborg characters in Decandido’s Resident Evil: Extinction, through the characters of Alice and other cyborgs in the story. Other cyborgs in the story are included in this study to show the varieties of cyborg characters. The problems of this study are how Resident Evil: Extinction portrays the Cyborg characters in the story and what the significances of those cyborgs in the story are. The aim of the study is to give deeper understanding about cyborg characters and the significances of the existence of cyborgs through the Extinction story. Using the theory of Cyborg by Donna Haraway, this study focuses on four variables of cyborg images (a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of machine and organism, a creature of lived social reality, and a creature of fiction) and the three boundaries that construct a cyborg (animal-human, organism-machine, and physical-non physical). The study finds that cyborg characters can be found not only in fiction but also in reality because human status has been blurred in this era, and the existence of those cyborgs can affect both of nature and culture. Key Terms: Cyborg, Science Fiction, Clone, Artificial Intelligence, Mutant.
