Abstract

How Jesus Christ is represented in the imaginary world is illustrated clearly in C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950). The novel tells us the story of four ordinary children, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy Pevensie. They accidentally discover that a professor's wardrobe leads to the magical land called Narnia. Helped by Asian, they struggle to save the land from the brink of destruction spread by the evil White Witch. The character of Asian is the focus of this study. Asian is described as the allusion of Jesus Christ in the real world. Lewis makes some essential changes to the figure of Christ that they make Aslan more accessible to children than the Christ, whom they learn about in church or another book. It gives different angle in the way the readers see Asian's character in the novel. Moreover, the story softens the symbols of Christianity. In analyzing the representation of Asian as Jesus Christ, the writer applies some theories and approaches in the effort of supplying reliable information. Theories of representation, proposed by Stuart Hall, will be used as the main theory to analyze this work. Stuart Hall writes that representations mean using language to say something meaningful, or to represent the world meaningfully to other people. In the end, the study offers the readers new alternative references on how The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe are read as a reading text material. It is more than just a fiction. It gives the readers some values in Christianity.
