Abstract

Teaching English as a second language to young learners in Elementary schools is different from that of teaching adults. It is because they have their own characteristics of learning. This study is aimed at analyzing the English language teaching process of non-English Department graduate. The participant was an English teacher who taught fifth year students. The data collection is the result of the research at Madrasah lbtidaiyah Darul Ulum Medaeng Waru Sidoarjo. The data is collected through observation, interview and recording to find problems in English language teaching faced by a teacher. The data shows that the English teacher is Mathematics teacher. The language use was dominated by Indonesian and sometimes Javanese. The first problems are when she made grammatical errors. In conducting the class, she met some students did not have their own book and talking each other with their friend. Then, the teacher decided to give punishment not only by asking them to do the exercise, but also by giving praise to the students who did their work well. She often could not finish one topic in one session because of lacking of time. The media was only the blackboard. She never had initiative to use other media to support the interaction with students. It can be concluded that the teacher must learn more about English, though she can teach in Elementary school. The media such as pictures of real object must support it to avoid the boredom and motivate the students that the lesson can be practised in their daily activities.
