Abstract

Madurese is one of the ethnic groups in Indonesia and its people spread everywhere in Indonesia, including Surabaya. As migrants, they have to be able to adapt with the new environment. They have to learn a new language or dialect in order to be able to interact with the new community. They receive different exposures than Madurese people who live in their native land, that have fewer opportunities to interact with other ethnic groups. As a result, their thought can be different, so it will be interesting to know the attitude of young Madurese people in Surabaya toward Madurese, Surabaya, and Jakarta dialects. The attitudes of Madurese respondents toward the use of Madurese, Surabaya, and Jakarta dialects are studied from four aspects, i. e. affective/ integrative dimension, pragmatic/ instrumental dimension, attitudes toward Madurese language as the native language, and miscellaneous. These aspects are reflected from a questionnaire consisting 35 questions, created by Annika Hohenthal (1998). The respondents of this study are young Madurese people in Surabaya that fulfill some criteria. The criteria are their age should be between 16 years old and 19 years old; they had to and were still in senior high school; their schools and houses are in Surabaya; their parents are the native speakers and have to use Madurese language in home; and had to fulfill the condition of staying two years or more at Surabaya From the study, the writer finds that young Madurese people in Surabaya think that Madurese dialect is the important and preference dialect. Surabaya dialect is considered as a dialect which provides ranges of aesthetic experiences in literature, and a dialect which is mostly used by young Madurese people in Surabaya. While, Jakarta dialect is used more frequently for looking for a job and in a public domain (teenagers' community).
