Abstract

This thesis describes the translation of slang expression found in the subtitle of a movie entitled Scary Movie 4 and the translation procedures applied based on Newmark (1988). By using qualitative method, the writer wants to give a detailed description about the translation procedures in translating slang expressions, especially in a movie entitled Scary Movie 4. As the results, the study shows that several applied translation procedures are Literal Translation, Transference, Cultural Equivalent, Modulation, Compensation, Shifts or Transposition, Note, Additions and Glosses, Couplets, and Deletion. The translation procedures which frequently applied in this study are Modulation and Couplet. The subtitler might use modulation and couplets for stylistic reason or idiomatic reason since those procedures enable the subtitler to find the appropriate equivalent, so the TL text sounds natural and conforms to its standard and structure of it.
