Abstract

This research paper describes the portrayal of woman struggle against the patriarchal ideology in the historical fiction film entitled „The Other Boleyn Girl‟ (2008) by Justin Chadwick that consider woman as secondary sex. The research paper discusses the extent to which the depiction of Anne Boleyn as female main character‟s struggle in resisting the patriarchal system occurred in 16th century of England monarch. It is still stereotyping women as secondary level and the significant conception of beauty notion that already constructed by society. The implication of woman as the other and the secondary level are discussed using feminism theory by French feminist named Simone de Beauvoir and also using beauty myth by Naomi Wolf as a supporting theory. The methodology that is used is qualitative textual analysis and analyzed the film by using narrative from Todorov and non narrative as data of analysis to convey the ideology meaning within the film. The aim of the analysis is to portray the characteristic of Anne Boleyn in challenging the role of male domination. The traditional gender stereotype and dichotomy of “The Self” and “The Other” victimizes the woman as sexual exploitation of man. It is one of the sources of deviance in the term of treatment and behavior. However, the male domination is the cause of woman struggle. By focusing on gender inequality issues and historical facts that occurred could strengthen the issue of gender discrimination experienced by women within the film.
