Abstract

In teaching, the teacher tends to talk about one topic and then develop it into many new topics or sub-topics. To develop topic, the teacher usually uses some strategies. The strategy used to reveal the topic is called topical strategy. The teacher may introduce, terminate, digress, resume, change, drift or even shift the topic. In shifting topic, the teacher sometimes uses markers or sometimes does not use any markers. In the first grade of Al-Azhar 11 Islamic Elementary School, which hired a native English teacher to teach English, the strategies above are also applied. The teaching methodology of the teacher intended also influences the application of topical strategy in the class. Since the teacher uses total physical response as his methodology, this thesis does not only study what kinds of topical strategies used by the teacher and how is the application of it in delivering certain topics, but also the influence of total physical response in its application. In the end, the writer concludes that the teacher applies all topical strategies and several topic shift markers. While TPR influences the application strategies in helping teacher to control the class.
