Abstract

The Other Side of the Story, a novel written by Marian Keyes, talked about life description of Jojo Harvey, Lily Wright, Gemma Hogan, and Mrs. Hogan. All of the characters in the novel faced the same problem of life, love affair. Jojo Harvey was the most ferocious literary agent in town. Her former career was NYPD cop; she lived in London made million dollars book deals. Lily Wright was an author who believed in karma, and she waited for the sky to fall after stole her former best friend's man. Though her first book failed to sell, her life turned upside down when her most recent book became huge bestseller. Gemma Hogan was an event designer extraordinaire, but her life was nonexistence after lost her love of her life and her best friend in one fell swoop. To make the matters worse, her father has just left her mother. While took care of her mother, she sent her close friend e-mail talking about her frustration. Her close friend forwarded the hilarious e-mail to a famous literary agent named Jojo Harvey, who just happened to represent her former friend, Lily Wright. The story started when Gemma's mother called her in her mobile phone. At first, she thought that her father was dead. Besides, it was the first timeher mother called her in her mobile. She was shock after heard her mother's explanation that her father left the house with a packed bag. Both Gemma and he mother were confused. They did not know the reason why Mr. Hogan leaving the house. Gemma tried to ask her father, but she did not get the satisfaction answer. Finally, she knew that her father has a mistress. The mistress is her father's secretary, Colette. She had two children, a girl of nine and a boy of seven. It made Gemma sad. She just lost someone she loves, Anton who betrayed her by having an affair with Lily, Gemma's best friend. In her frustration, Gemma sent Susan, her close friend who was living in Seattle e-mail. She told Susan that her mother condition get worse from day to day. Mrs. Hogan felt that her husband affair is the result of her fault. Mrs. Hogan faced her problem emotionally. She had to take some antidepressant pills when she got panic attack. Gemma's life got worse when she knew that Lily Wright, her enemy, wrote an amazing novel. Accidentally, Susan sent most of Gemma's novel to a literary agent, Jojo Harvey. At first, Gemma was upset since Susan did not ask her about that. However, after knew that the agent is the same agent who promotes Lily's novel Gemma was agree to write a novel. Her purpose was to warn Lily. She wanted Lily know that she can do the same thing as Lily. Gemma's novel talked about the affair of her father. Gemma's mother had a relationship with younger man, Helmut. Gemma was very surprised, but she hoped that it can cure her mother's pain. Gemma's life began change. Her father went back home. He was accepted well by Gemma's mother. Several months after that, the novel was published. Gemma got great response for her first published novel. The novel was bombed and it come out in the middle of May. She went to oversea with some of her friends to celebrate her succeed. There, she realized that her hatred feeling toward the people who betray her only brings hatred. For Gemma, forgiving was much better rather than keeping the hatred. Jojo was busy in her office handling some interviews for some magazines. She was a success literary agent. Jojo promoted a lot of books to the publisher. She handled a novel written by new corner author Lily Wright. After handled Lily's novel she got a bundle of e-mail. The bundle of e-mail was believed can be a good novel. Jojo's personal life was not so good. Jojo had an affair with her boss, Mark, a married man with two children. She kept the affair for herself. Jojo worried that someday Mark's wife knows the affair. She did not want to destroy anyone's marriage. She regretted the affair and felt sorry to Mark's family. The affair did not go well. One of Jojo's officemate began realizing the affair. Because of it, Mark did not vote Jojo for the promotion. Jojo felt that Mark has already betrayed her. She decided to quit working having the affair. Mark begged Jojo not to stop working. After leaving Mark, Jojo faced another problem, her career went down. Many authors rejected to cooperate with, only Gemma who wanted work with Jojo. Fortunately, Gemma's novel could be sold in millions. Because of her success, some authors cooperated with her again. She had four employments and colored-glass office in Soho. The life of Lily was haunted by her guilty feeling toward her best friend, Gemma. Lily realized that Gemma hates her very much since Lily stole Gemaa's lover. At the first time Lily met Anton, Gemma's man, she warned herself not to fall in love with Anton. However, she cannot avoid falling in love with him. Then, she built romantic relationship with Anton. Anton and Lily had a baby daughter, but Lily did not decide to marry Anton. In her pregnancy time, Lily wrote a novel to spend her time. Anton suggested sending the story to an agency. The first novel was failed. Anton kept motivating Lily to write other story. The second novel, Mimi's Remedies, became bestseller. Lily became a famous person. She had to attend her book launching in several malls and book stores in the town. Lily gained a great royalty and had a lot of money. Anton asked her to get a proper house to stay. Lily, Anton and their daughter moved from their small apartment to a beautiful house. Lily wrote her newest novel to get more money and pay the rest count of the house. Unfortunately, the novel, Crystal Life, was not good. At the same time Lily heard that Gemma writes a novel. She thought that Gemma will revenge her. Lily could not pay the rest price of the house. Lily, Anton and their daughter had to move from the house. Lily thought that it was Anton's fault since Anton persuaded her to buy expansive house without thinking the risk. Being disappointed, Lily decided to leave Anton. Lily took Ema, her daughter, to live in Lily's friend's house. Anton tried to meet her and ask Lily to live together. However, Lily thought that it was enough for Anton to ruin her life. Then, Lily moved to her mother's house in the country. In the way she got an accident. The car was hit by a truck. Both Lily and Ema were saved. They had to be hospitalized several weeks. Lily got a trauma because of the accident. After the horrible accident Lily and Ema stayed in the country. Mrs. Wright, Lily's mother, suggested her to tell Anton about their condition. Lily did not agree with her mother. But after thinking about Ema, she decided to meet Anton. Lily continued the relation. Lily kept writing. Her career went from strength to strength. She wrote another novel called A Charmed Life, which was like another Mimi's Remedies and sold in the millions. Finally, Crystal Life, the book that nearly broke, surprised everyone by getting short-listed for the Orange Prize and that also sold in the millions.
